UMCOR Awards Solidarity Grant to the North Georgia Conference for Catoosa and Floyd County Flood Response

9/7/2022

UMCOR has awarded a solidarity grant of $10,000 to the North Georgia Conference to support initial relief efforts for the damage caused by severe flooding in Chattooga and Floyd Counties this weekend.

The Conference is coordinating with a range of local and state partners including GEMA (Georgia Emergency Management) and Georgia VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) as the assessment phase continues.

"Sometimes the best thing to do is wait. The flood happened on Sunday and Monday was Labor Day, so the assessment phase is really only getting complete today," said Rev. Wes Privett, pastor of Summerville UMC. "The truth is we still don’t know what’s needed."

Our best response today is to wait, pray, give, and prepare.

  • As always, don’t self deploy to a disaster area.
  • Your financial gift to UMCOR is especially appreciated. You may make a donation through any United Methodist church in the North Georgia Conference by designating your donation for UMCOR U.S. Disaster Response  #901670 or directly at https://umcmission.org/advance-project/901670/.
  • Please do not deliver supplies unless we receive a direct request. The affected communities have very limited storage capacity and unneeded supplies are already creating a burden. A coordinated effort of donations is vital and this measured response is happening through our state network.
  • Let's replenish the Disaster Response Warehouse. UMCOR Cleaning Kits help those affected by floods, hurricanes, and tornadoes to begin the overwhelming job of cleaning up. Find instructions on assembling Cleaning Buckets at https://umcmission.org/umcor-cleaning-kit/
