Class is in Session: Candler Students Spend Two Weeks at General Conference

4/24/2024

A class of 20 Candler students led by retired Associate Dean of Methodist Studies Anne Burkholder and Professor in the Practice of Practical Theology and Methodist Studies Tom Elliott is gathered at General Conference for two weeks.

Not only are the students observing the decision-making process, they are also researching and tracking legislation and meeting with legislative committees, delegates, and petition sponsors.

This is the first Candler class to get this opportunity in eight years.

“It is an important opportunity for students to interact and work with United Methodists from across the world," said Assistant Dean of Methodist Studies Brett Opalinski (a clergy delegate from the Florida Annual Conference). "There are also daily class meetings for students to connect and reflect on what they are experiencing.”

Candler alumni and friends are invited to a Candler Club dinner in conjunction with General Conference on April 26. The dinner will include a performance by the Candler Singers and a campus update from Dean Jan Love. (For those in Charlotte, click here for more information and to register.)

The Candler Singers will also perform in conjunction with General Conference at several locations throughout North Carolina this weekend:

Sunday, April 28, 8:45 and 11:00 a.m. worship: Brevard First UMC, Brevard
