Annual Conference Gathers for November 2023 Special Session

In what was a solemn day, members of the 2023 North Georgia Annual Conference ratified the disaffiliation agreements of 262 churches* at a Special Called Session.
Rev. Carolyn Stephens, vice chair of the Conference Board of Trustees, presented the motion to the Conference on behalf of the Board of Trustees, and the names of the churches requesting disaffiliation were read by their district superintendent. Each district lay leader offered a prayer.
The requests of three churches* were not ratified following discussion by the members of the Annual Conference. Those churches are The Fountain UMC at Sugarloaf in Duluth, McEachern Memorial UMC in Powder Springs, and Griffin First UMC.
The date of disaffiliation for the departing churches is November 30, 2023. They have an additional 30 days to fulfill the terms of the agreement** which include financial and other obligations. (Learn more at www.ngumc.org/disaffiliation-process-and-information.)
In December, approximately 440 North Georgia Conference churches continue the work of fulfilling the mission of the United Methodist church in our communities and beyond.
Additionally, during the month of December, we anticipate the beginning of several new United Methodist faith communities in our Conference.
Any member of a departing congregation who wishes to remain United Methodist is invited to transfer their membership to another United Methodist Church in their community (search churches), transfer membership to a LIghthouse Congregation, or transfer their membership to their district roll. "Though our paths diverge, we acknowledge that ... there is one body and one Spirit, just as [we] were called to the one hope of [our] calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all. But each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ’s gift. (Eph. 4:4-7) As we part, we do so with mercy, recognizing the grace entrusted to each in our Lord Jesus Christ and extending to one another the right hand of fellowship."
